The Quitman Basketball tournament went exceptionally well for many teams involved, including those from Cedar Creek. Both the Cougars and Lady Cougars went 2-1 for the tournament. The boys from Cedar Creek fell short to Quitman on Thursday night, but quickly bounced back as they had a strong win over Dodson on Friday. Things continued to go well for the Cougars with a big win over Calvin on Saturday.
The Lady Cougars started the tournament last Thursday by taking on defending Class C state champions and undefeated, Summerfield Lady Rebels. In the first quarter the Lady Rebels scored 9 points, all three pointers. The Lady Cougars answered back with four points. At the half the score was 12-4 with Summerfield in the lead. After half time, the Lady Cougars came out strong, scoring 7 points and holding Summerfield to 4 points for the third quarter. In the fourth the game was up for grabs, and though the Cougars outscored the Rebels 14-12, they fell short by three points, the final being 28-25. This left Cedar Creek with a 4-1 record, and Summerfield still undefeated at 13-0.
The next day spirits picked up for the Lady Cougars, as they achieved their 5th win of the season over Dodson, with a final score of 49-15. Anna Larr Roberson, junior power forward for the Lady Cougars, scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds. Senior center, Anna Katherine Tollett, had 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior point guard Savannah Rojas made great moves, acquiring 8 assists and 4 steals on the game.
Things continued to pick up for the Lady Cougars as they faced Weston on Saturday afternoon, the final score being 64-32. Sophomores Lauren Menzina and Alli Freeman stepped up this game, scoring 17 and 11 points respectively. Anna Larr Roberson added 19 points.
The Quitman Tournament left Cedar Creek’s basketball programs feeling not only hopeful, but confident about the future games of the season.
